About Rameshwaram Temple

Rameshwaram Temple

Arulmigu Ramanathaswamy Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva and one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams. It is located on Rameshwaram Island (Pamban Island) in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu, India. The temple is dedicated to Lord Ramanathaswamy (Shiva) and is one of the four sacred sites of the Char Dham pilgrimage.

The temple is famous for its 1,212-pillar corridor—among the longest in the world—and its 22 sacred theerthams. Pilgrims traditionally bathe in the Agni Theertham (sea) and then in the 22 wells inside the temple before offering worship. The island is connected to the mainland by the Pamban Bridge. The temple is approximately 170 km from Madurai and about 250 km from Chennai.
